3 Ways to Create with Scraps

Are you stir crazy yet? How many times have you gone around the block... paced the backyard... stared at everything in the house trying to come up with something different to do? ANYTHING DIFFERENT! This blog today is for all the sewers out there. You know you have that stash of fabric scraps that keeps getting bigger and bigger! Today, let’s tackle that! The problem with scraps is that they are…scraps! They came from something big that you made (cosplay costumes, pillows, bags, blankets…). Now is the time to think outside the box and have some fun. You can create scrappy bags, pillows, table runners, napkins, zip wallets… let your imagination go. Here are some ideas!

Table Runners

I had some purple and pink fabric that was taking up space and definitely needed to get used up. (I don’t throw away anything). So purple and pink reminds me of Teepo from Tales of Xillia… right? It is just cotton fabric, so it wouldn’t make a very soft plushie. Instead I created a table runner and napkins. The only responsible thing to do after that is to host a Tales of- themed virtual Tea-po Tea Party (all in cosplay, of course)!

Bags

I had a large pile of Star Wars fabric scraps from over the years.  These were of random sizes and shapes but again I couldn’t throw them away! I came up with two projects-a small bag lined with the fabric scraps and a zip wallet. The bag was great because I not only used up the fabric scraps but also bias tape remnants! By sewing the fabrics scraps to make squares and rectangles, I pieced together the lining. I used the bias tape remnants with D-rings to make key chain holders.  This was fun to make as the project kept evolving when I found the bias tapes and D-rings.

Zip Wallets

Do you have a lot of really small (but really cool scraps)? It often seems like a waste to throw all of those scraps away. Zip wallets are a wonderful way to use up scraps while making a fun and practical bag! Crazy quilting doesn’t discriminate between the size or shape of your fabric scrap. You can use literally anything.

Get Creative!

I have extra time while sheltering in place. What do to next? I have lots of pleather…zombie and pleather? Dragon wings for Yona the bearded dragon? My options are endless!

Show us your projects on social media! We’d love to see how creative you all get!
